Energy! You will have succeeded with this unit if at the end you understand what energy is, the 3 (4!) ways in which energy is transmitted from one object to another, what the electromagnetic spectrum is, why tomatoes are red, and why the sky is blue. In addition, make sure that you understand the difference between heat and temperature, and why rising air cools.

We will do a short lab today, because "one test is worth a million expert opinions!". Wednesday you will have the opportunity to enjoy a quiz about energy transfer. Study party after school Tuesday if you have any questions about the material on the quiz.

Strata, superposition, uniformitarianism, deposition, lithification!

Go out tonight to see the Geminid meteor shower, about 50-80 meteors per hour - maybe up to 120 meteors per hour - on the night of Dec. 13-14. The Geminid meteor shower occurs when the Earth passes through a trail of rocky debris from an extinct comet.

You will have succeeded with this unit if at the end you understand what the Earth is like deep inside, why we think that the crust of the Earth is moving about and what happens when pieces of the crust collide, where the Hawaiian Islands come from and where they are going, what the world might look like in the future, and what Connecticut has been doing for the past 600 million years.

Today in class we take a look at the center of the Earth and see how that might effect the outside. There is a video, and if you are absent you want to download the study guide here. We will also see how we can tell the age of old rocks.
 
Tonight! You have some reading to do. You will read Lesson 1 in the Earth Science Passwords book. Do NOT read the part about soil. You do NOT need to know the words "topsoil", "subsoil" and "humus". After you read the book, fill in the 4 worksheets:
A. Questions 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10
B. Questions 2, 3, 5
C. Questions 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10.
D. Questions 1, 4, 5

Today in class we cover a brief history of the Earth, and start to discover why Europe is one foot farther away from West Hartford than it was when you were born. There will be a movie and a note sheet which you can download here if you are absent.
 
You have homework tonight! There is a reading assignment on Plate Tectonics. You will read Lesson 2 in the Earth Science Passwords book. After you read the book, fill in the 4 worksheets.
Extra Credit Opportunity Today!! Watch a movie about Ancient Pompeii (Rated PG13 for people getting hurt). This one will really help you understand volcanoes, and also will help your grade!
